War years are remembered in new exhibition

THE newly elected Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Brian Heading visited the ‘Belfast Blitz’ exhibition at Dunmurry Community Centre as his first Official Engagement.

Organised by ‘War Years Remembered’ the exhibition was set up to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Belfast Blitz. Councillor Margaret Tolerton also attended the exhibition.

The Mayor said: “This exhibition, put together by David McCallion, promotes the roles which women played during wartime. Women worked in the munitions factories and mills across the Province in which they made uniforms, cam nets and parachutes.

“It was very interesting to hear how women worked the home front and lived during the Blitz while the men were at war. There are even mannequins to represent the children who were evacuated from Belfast after the Blitz.

“I would encourage everyone to go along and view a War Years Remembered exhibition as it definitely does bring history alive for all the generations. The Blitz and the War did not discriminate against any particular community and the exhibitions are evidence of this.”

The mission of War Years Remembered is to provide both young and old with a greater understanding of life during all the conflicts both on the battlefield and the home front.

The collections on display are part of a mobile museum which travels throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland; and is available to visit schools throughout the Lisburn area.
