War years recalled at Hillsborough WI

HILLSBOROUGH: President Salfran Sinnerton presided over the April meeting of Hillsborough WI.

After the minutes and roll call, the speaker Mary Davis was introduced.

Mary, a member of the Institute, entertained and enthralled everyone with an account of her work in World War Two. Aged 17½ Mary enlisted in the WRAF where, after initial training in Gloucester and Morecombe, she became part of a highly secretive and important group dealing with enemy codes.

After VE Day, Mary was posted to Cairo, where she met her husband.

Sheila Lockett, herself a war veteran, proposed a vote of thanks. The competition was won by Reah Browne, with Jeanette Shannon in second.

The meeting finished with the singing of the Countrywoman’s Song.
