A WARM tribute has been paid to a well known Lisburn headmaster who passed away last week following a long illness.

Mr John Dornan had been Principal at Lisburn Central PS since September 1992.

He died last Thursday, peacefully, at his Moira home. He was the adored husband of Jean and cherished father of Susan. A Funeral Service was held in St. John's Parish Church, Moira on Monday and he was buried afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.

Originally from Limavady, Mr Dornan graduated from Queen's University with BA in German and Economic History. Before taking up his position at Central he taught in Forthill Primary, Tonagh Primary, Pond Park Primary and Braniel Primary School where he was Vice-Principal.

Acting Principal of Lisburn Central, Mr Ian Stewart, said Mr Dornan was a greatly respected and held in very high esteem by the Board of Governors, staff, pupils and parents.

He commented: "It is a time of sadness, not only for the school community at Lisburn Central, but also for anyone who worked with Mr Dornan over the years.

"We will miss him greatly. The wide circle of people who have expressed their sympathies in recent days is a true testimony of the respect with which he was held both within education and outside of it."

He described Mr Dornan as a "dedicated and enthusiastic classroom teacher", who "led by example through his hard work and his first priority was what was best for the school and its pupils".

"He was determined and quick witted and developed Lisburn Central into a school of which staff, pupils and parents are proud to be a part.

During his long battle with illness he continued, when well enough, to devote his time to his role as Principal and, while going through treatment, he abseiled down the Europa Hotel in support of cancer care, showing that even through his own battle with illness his thoughts were of helping others," said Mr Stewart.
