Warning after dud £5 found in Ballymoney

A CASH warning has been issued to Ballymoney traders and shoppers after it was revealed that counterfeit banknotes are circulating in the area.

Several 5, 10 and 20 notes, described as good forgeries, are believed to have turned up in the town.

One Ballymoney victim, called into the Times office armed with a dud 5 note. He explained: “My wife was given this note a few days ago. She’d paid for something with a 20 note and was given a 10, the dud 5 plus change - she never thought to check it and just put it straight into her purse.

“I know there’s nothing we can do now apart from hand it in to the bank and contact the police, but I would really like to warn others to keep an eye out. It’s getting close to Christmas and people are rushing around busy buying presents and goods - however it doesn’t take two minutes to just check your change. It could be a costly purchase if you don’t.”

A police spokesman warned: “Although a number of these forgeries have been found, it’s entirely possible that there are more in circulation.”
