Warning over oil thefts

POLICE Chief Jason Murphy has warned local people to be on their guard after the recent spell of heating oil thefts.

Chief Inspector Murphy said: “The current spell of cold weather has led to increased demand on fuel companies for heating oil. We have already seen several reports of heating oil being stolen from tanks as a result of the current demand I would ask the community to remain vigilant against this type of crime.”

“If oil is being stolen it will require a van or something similar to transport it away and it will take some time to steal hundreds of litres. If you notice activity of this nature which appears to be suspicious please contact police straight away. “

However, crime figures released for December 2008 and 2009, show that burglary incidents have gone down from 53 to just 23 - a total decrease of 56 per cent.

Meanwhile theft has gone down from a staggering 118 incidents in December 2008 to a low of 39 last month - another 56% decrease.

Violent crime has also seen a reduction from 140 to 82, which is a reduction of 41%.

Anti social behaviour, however, has only seen a 22% decrease from 257 to 201 incidents from December 2008 to the same period last year.

Chief Inspector Murphy said: “As a result of police and the local community working together over the Christmas period, we have seen relatively low levels of crime and disorder. Levels of crime during December are significantly down on last year’s figures with burglary down by 56 per cent and anti social behaviour down by 22%. I understand there are ongoing concerns about recent burglaries in Portadown and Lurgan but I can assure the public we are doing all we can.

“ I would remind householders to continue to ensure that your property is secured and to report any suspicious activity to us as it is happening."

Anyone with information or concerns about crime can contact their local police station on 0845 600 8000 or contact the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
