Was abusive to police during an ‘ugly incident’

A young Lurgan man who was abusive to police officers during an ‘ugly incident’ was fined £200 last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for disorderly behaviour on December 14 last year.

Nineteen-year-old Sean James Rodgers, whose address was given as River Glade Manor, Lurgan, was also ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard that at 1am in Market Street police were dealing with a member of the public when the defendant tried to intervene.

He shouted loudly at police officers and had to be escorted from the area.

Around 1.20am in Church Place the attention of a different police patrol was drawn to the defendant who said ‘police w--kers’ to them.

An officer explained to Rodgers that there were a number of people in the area and he replied ‘police c---ts’ to officers.

When cautioned he said: “Make sure you and your mates check under your cars for bombs.”

A barrister representing the defendant said Rodgers was embarrassed by 
what he had done and would apologise.

He added that it was a case of ‘the drink goes in and the wit goes out’.

Rodgers saw a friend getting arrested and got involved.

Deputy District Judge Laura Ievers said it was an ‘ugly incident involving 
offensive behaviour’ 
after Rodgers had been given an opportunity by 
officers at the 
scene.
