Waste not wanted say council

BUSINESSES and charities from outside Craigavon have been asked to use other recycling centres not Craigavon's - saving local ratepayers nearly £18,000 a year.

In an unusual move Craigavon Borough Council has written to businesses and charities from as far away as Newtownards, Belfast, Glenavy and Markethill reminding them to use their own closer recycling centres.

Chairman of the Environmental Services Committee, Councillor Johnny McGibbon explained: “It’s unacceptable for the Craigavon ratepayers to pay for waste which is the responsibility of another authority.

“Although these businesses and charities pay for using our recycling centres, the numbers using our centres has increased dramatically over the last few months. It may be that Craigavon’s rates are cheaper. However, this affects Craigavon’s recycling rates and could lead to serious financial penalties through Council’s Landfill allowances."

It is estimated that by refusing to take waste from businesses and charities Council could save ratepayers 17,550.

Officers have now been asked how they are going to be able to ensure that the waste accepted has originated from within Craigavon. They will produce a report on how this new process will affect the recycling centres.
