Watch out forcreepers usingdarker nights

AS darkness descends this autumn, Londonderry’s top cop and the chair of the local police watchdog are asking people to watch out for opportunist ‘creeper burglars’ on the look out for off guard householders.

Following a recent spate of residential burglaries in Londonderry householders are again reminded to Close it, Lock it, Check it.

Councillor Thomas Conway, Chairperson of the Londonderry Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) said: “We are fully supportive of any initiatives that raise public awareness of the need to keep their homes safe.

“As we are now coming into the darker nights I would encourage residents to secure their homes by closing and locking all doors, windows and gates even if they are just nipping out for a few minutes.

“From experience we know that a lot of residential burglaries are opportunistic with criminals taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows.

“Many of these crimes are easily avoidable and it is now an opportune time to remind residents to take a few simple steps every day to keep their homes secure from criminals.”

He added: “I would ask that anyone with any information on these recent break-ins contact the PSNI on 0845 600 8000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Foyle Area Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Burrows added: “I would simply remind householders to close their doors and windows, lock their doors and windows and check their home is secure.

“A few minutes checking doors and windows can save people from the heartache of dealing with the aftermath of a break-in and burglary.”
