A police spokesperson said: “With the temperature outside rising as we enter spring, we may be using our heating less and checking our oil levels less frequently. This can provide an opportunity for thieves to help themselves to the contents of your tank. Home heating oil is an expensive commodity and it therefore makes good economic sense for people to take whatever steps they can to protect themselves and their neighbours against this type of crime.

“We would encourage people to be on the lookout for any activity that is out of the ordinary in the local area. Many oil thefts involve quantities that would require a large transport vehicle so people should pay particular attention to any lorries, vans, or cars towing trailers laden with containers that would be capable of transporting oil. One telltale sign may be unmarked vehicles. Most oil distributors advertise their company on their delivery vehicles so if you see any tanker at an address without markings please alert the individual affected and contact police.

“Always make sure that the lid of your own tank is locked with a suitable padlock, and consider fitting sensor lights to brighten up dark areas around your home, particularly areas around the oil tank. Try to limit access to the tank by keeping gates closed and locked as well.

“Finally, be a good neighbour. Check on elderly neighbours or relatives who could be vulnerable to this type of crime Encourage them to undertake some of the steps outlined to reduce their risk of falling victim.”
