Water Service video on burst pipes

AS the cold spell continues, NI Water has released a short demonstration video showing customers what steps to take should a frozen pipe burst in their home.

“When temperatures drop, water pipes can freeze and then, when thawed, they often burst,” said Celine Rodgers, NI Water’s external communications manager. “This year, NI Water has gone the extra mile for our customers and filmed a short demonstation video showing householders where to look for pipes that can potentially freeze and also how they can turn their water supply off within the home should a pipe burst.”

As temperatures were set to drop to sub-zero over the weekend, NI Water urged customers to consider the impact this cold period could have on their pipes.

“The effects of dealing with the aftermath of a burst pipe in a home or business can be devastating,” added Celine. “Water can cause serious damage to furniture and carpets and often treasured possessions have to be thrown away.

If the burst occurs in a property, it can lead to days, if not weeks of lost business. Taking half an hour now to check the pipes around and within your property, could save future heartache.”

Simple advice includes insulating water tanks and pipes in unheated areas such as roof spaces and outbuildings, keeping your boiler well serviced and, if on holiday, leaving a key with a neighbour or friend who can check the house regularly.
