DUP MLA William Hay said the man agreed to meet his attackers at a play park in the estate at approximately 11.30pm in an incident that mirrored the criminal operations of vigilantes in nationalist areas.

“It almost mirrors what dissident republicans have been doing on the Cityside, when young people are almost being ordered to come to a particular area where the shooting takes place,” said Mr Hay.

“This is the first time that we’ve had an incident of this nature in the Waterside area,” he added.

Chief Inspector Burrows said: “It was barbaric, it sends out all the wrong signals, it has brought great injury to the victim and it is important that we track down those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Information can be given on the police non-emergency number 101.
