WEA liquidator isduly appointed

John Hansen of KPMG has been appointed as liquidator of Londonderry-based Workers’ Educational Association (WEA-NI), which provided life-long learning to adults in the community and workplaces.

The liquidator was appointed at a creditors’ meeting on June 30.

The WEA recently explained: “It is with the utmost regret that the management committee and the senior management team of WEA-NI have found themselves in the position, due to circumstances completely outside their control, that we have been forced to wind the organisation up.

“With immediate effect all activities and services provided by the organisation will cease. The management committee and senior management team would like to pay tribute to the support we have had from our employees, tutors, learners, funders and partners.”

The WEA was set up in Belfast in 1910 and was part of a wider network of WEAs.

The first WEA was started in England in 1903.
