‘Weak regulation prevented the switch to natural gas’

East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson has welcomed a decision from the Competition Commission that the Utility Regulator has been too harsh in its regulation of Phoenix Natural Gas.

The provisional decision should now leave the path free for Phoenix Natural Gas to expand its network into Whitehead, a move which was effectively prevented by the original determination.

“This decision opens up the door for a growing number of my constituents to experience the benefits of natural gas,” said Mr Dickson, who recently converted his own home to gas. “The availability of gas has major benefits to the consumer; typically a household switching from oil to natural gas can expect to save around £1,000 per annum. During these tough times that fact cannot be ignored. Business owners in the area should also be aware of the benefits afforded by conversion.”

Fellow Alliance represenative Councillor Noel Williams, former Head of the Energy Saving Trust in Northern Ireland, emphasised the benefits of natural gas over other fossil fuels. “Coal produces 58 per cent more carbon dioxide than natural gas whilst oil produces 32 per cent more. So in the process of saving expenditure on heating or hot water, you can also help save the planet for your children and grandchildren,” he said.

“I join my colleague in calling on Phoenix Natural Gas to commence the work in Whitehead as soon as the final determination is revealed.”

“The sooner Whitehead gains natural gas the better,” Mr Dickson added. “It is a shame that weak regulation has prevented this area of my constituency, and many others, from being able to realise the savings available through installing gas; it is my expressed desire that this is rectified soon.

“I am therefore asking residents of Whitehead to contact my staff if they are interested in switching to gas. My office can be reached by phone on 028 9335 0286, by e-mail at [email protected], or by visiting us at 8 West Street, Carrickfergus.”

Meanwhile, Cllr Williams recommended that Whitehead residents who would like advice on any energy issue should contact the Bryson Energy Advice Line, by telephone on Freephone 0800 1422 865 or their website at www.brysonenergy.org.
