The Londonderry and Antrim coastlines were battered as the so-called ‘weatherbomb’ exploded. Beaches were closed down at Benone, Portstewart and Portrush, and it’s understood two sightseers had lucky escapes at Portstewart Strand after they were swept into the water.

Powerful waves lashed the shoreline and caused extensive damage to some properties including a beach cafe in Portstewart.

The power of the sea was captured on film by Mullans Fashions, which is on the Promenade at Portstewart. It shows how passers-by and motorists were drenched as a huge wave crashed over the sea wall and crossed the road, almost breaching the businesses based along the busy road.
