Wedding with a difference with Elvis as priest

A wedding with a difference is set to take place in the Woodville Arms this Saturday night.

The guests are due to arrive at 8.30pm for the mock wedding to end all mock weddings.

It’s been organised by Deborah Greene and Christine McVeigh who are raising money for a trip to the Special Olympics in Los Angeles where they’ll be volunteering.

The groom will be Stephen O’Hagan, Clan na Gael player and classroom assistant at Ceara with his fellow Ceara classroom assistant Marty McGibbon as best man. The bride won’t be revealed until the night though her mother will be Ceara classroom assistant Carolene Galbraith and pupil Carla Cassidy will be bridesmaid. Flowergirl duties will be fulfilled by Ellie Reynolds, cast in the forthcoming production of Hairspray in the Grand Opera House.

It’s come about after three ladies from the area got the news they’d been accepted to go to the Special Olympics as volunteers - Deborah Greene and Christine McVeigh, who have organised the mock wedding as part of their fundraising and Maria Donnelly, who is doing her own fundraising.

All three are from Derrymacash and played Camogie for St Enda’s. Although they’d talked about volunteering at the Special Olympics, they’d all put their applications in separately then were amazed when they were all accepted.

As well as financing the trip the money they’re raising will go towards financing Special Olympics clubs throughout Ireland.

Deborah, who works for Thomas Moore Sports in the town, said: “Everyone feels under pressure going to a wedding, having to buy presents, etc. This way there’s no pressure and everyone can enjoy it.

“Big O is the compere and Bunion ‘Elvis’ McGibbon is the priest. Lurgan Limos are running a draw to arrive in style on the night with a limo ride to the Woodville. And after the wedding service music from Barry C and Keith James will have everyone dancing to the small hours.”

Tickets are £15, available from Thomas Moores, Deborah Greene, Christine McVeigh and Carolene Galbraith. All involved in putting on the wedding are providing their services free of charge.
