WELB to move 2 classes to Ebrington

CHIEF Executive of the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) Barry Mulholland has given notice of the proposed relocation of speech and language services from Belmont House to Ebrington, St Anne’s and Ballykelly Primary Schools from September.

The specialised language unit has been deemed ‘unsuitable’ by the WELB.

Mr Mulholland has now given notification that two speech and language classes will be moved from the Woodlands Unit to both Ebrington Primary School and St Anne’s Primary School from September.

Speech and language provision is also due to be expanded with two additional classes proposed.

It will mean the closure will of the Woodlands Unit at Belmont House Special School from August 2013, if it is approved by the Education Minister John O’Dowd.

Last year Mr O’Dowd stated: “Its location, within the grounds of Belmont House Special School, is considered unsuitable by the WELB as the current approach for children who need such support is to provide it at mainstream primary schools.”
