‘We’re still looking out for you’

Thanks to additional funding from PSNI the cameras in the Coleraine town centre have been upgraded and additional cameras installed within Portrush.

Funded by the Department of Justice, Safer Coleraine says it “continues to look out for you in public areas of Coleraine, Portrush and Portstewart.”

The aim of the CCTV system is to create a positive and safe environment for local residents, businesses and visitors to the area. The cameras record images 24/7 and are actively monitored in a recently upgraded local monitoring suite.

The partnership also continues to work with local businesses in Coleraine with the provision of a Radiolink membership scheme.

This complementary service to the CCTV system is a comprehensive retail radio crime prevention scheme that links all participating members in Coleraine town centre to each other via the CCTV control room and to directly to local PSNI officers.

The radio system allows the rapid transfer of information on suspicious or criminal activity, antisocial behaviour or major incidents direct to CCTV operators and local town beat officers which can then be tracked.

The original CCTV system was installed in Coleraine 15 years ago and this upgrade will ensure that the system remains efficient and compliments the recent installations in Portrush and Portstewart.

Nicky Thompson, Chief Inspector and local Area Commander, PSNI, told The Coleraine Times: “This is good news for the local population both public and businesses.

“The upgrade of the original CCTV system in Coleraine and the addition of cameras in Portrush is very welcome at this time to ensure that the system can work effectively and efficiently for the future.

“Working in partnership with local council, Safer Coleraine and local businesses will continue to ensure that the Coleraine area is a positive and safe environment for all who use the town centres in Coleraine, Portrush and Portstewart.”
