'Wetting the baby's head'

CELEBRATIONS were cut short for a Lurgan man caught drink driving after the birth of his child in January 1982.

The 23-year-old was fined 75 and banned from driving for 12 months on a charge of drunken driving as well as charges of careless driving and having no driving licence at Lurgan court.

A prosecuting inspector told the court the defendant crashed his car into an oncoming vehicle. He was arrested by police and the alcohol level in his blood was found to be 202mg.

The defending solicitor explained that the defendant’s wife had just had a baby which hadn’t been too well and had just been released from hospital that day, so the defendant had decided to go out for a celebratory drink.
