'Wheely' nice time in Spain

LURGAN Rugby Club had a 'wheely' good time in Spain recently.

The club went on tour to Costa Brava to round off the busy season. While there, several matches were arranged with the locals, the first of which was a cricket match which took a rather amusing turn, according to cricket fan Jonathan Johns.

Club coach Chris Stevenson was fielding - or according to contrary reports, lying on the ground to conserve his energy - when he sprang into action to collect the ball, only for him to injure his knee in the process and return to lying on the ground.

After several minutes of non-movement an opposition player gestured for their finest stretcher to be brought on to rescue the stricken coach - a wheelbarrow. Seemingly St John’s Ambulance aren’t operational in Spain.

There was a hushed silence as four locals placed him carefully onto the 'magic' wheelbarrow and carted him off to the touchline, with him shouting instructions at the players all the way. Now that’s true leadership.

The match ended in a draw and Chris has since made a full recovery.

Chris said: “I think I must be the only person ever to be removed from the field of play on a wheelbarrow.

"I was lying on my backside because the ball wasn’t coming near me. Then the ball came my direction and when I got up something went in my knee.

"A couple of hours with ice on it and it was grand. It was all very amusing.”
