Whiskey plansmove forward

THE return of full-scale whiskey distillation in Londonderry has taken another step forward with the submission of an application by Niche Drinks to make the drink in Campsie.

The cream liqueur exported have been homogenising alcohol and cream from their site at the old Leckpatrick Dairy on Rossdowney Road for almost 30 years.

But now the former St. Brendan’s Irish Cream Liqueur Co is aiming to revive the once proud tradition of whiskey-making in Londonderry and are intent on building a new distillery in the town.

At the end of the 19th century and well into the early 20th century, Londonderry was a world leader in whiskey production, and the Watts Distillery at Abbey Street was the largest distillery in Ireland.

Now Niche Drinks have applied for permission to make whiskey from malt and grain at lands approximately 190 metres west of McLean Road, Campsie.
