Whiteabbey Action Cancer support group celebrates 35th anniversary

ACTION Cancer's longest serving support group - based in Whiteabbey - celebrated its 35th anniversary with a reception at the Long Gallery, Stormont hosted by Minister for Finance and Personnel, Sammy Wilson MLA.

Over 60 current and past members as well as longterm supporters of the group came together on Monday night (March 22), to mark the milestone, and the amazing achievement of the group raising over 200,000 for the charity.

Mr Sammy Wilson MLA congratulated the group on their loyalty to the charity and the generosity of the local community in helping them continue their work.

Founder members, Caroline McClurg and Vikki Dundas, then spoke of their memories of starting the group and all the events they have organised over 35 years which have included collections, carol singing, fashion shows and craft fairs.

Vikki also paid tribute to those members who are sadly no longer with us, but who had made a huge contribution to the group.

Billy Hamill, former Chairperson and long-term group member then made a presentation to Betty and Bertie Cameron who have raised over 41,000 for the group through collections at Jumna Street Linfield Supporters Club.

Norman Carson, Chief Operating Officer for Action Cancer congratulated the group on their dedication to the charity, and praised every member for their own personal contribution.

Dougie King, Head of Fundraising and Communications for Action Cancer spoke to acknowledge the developments in the charity over the past 35 years, adding how without the support of groups such as the one in Whiteabbey, this would not have been possible.

The night ended with the current Chairperson of Whiteabbey Group, Lawrence Fisher, who compered proceedings, thanking everyone for supporting the group and for attending the celebration.

Action Cancer is Northern Ireland’s leading cancer charity, providing crucial lifesaving services to people living with cancer near you. Action Cancer services include breast screening for women aged 40-49 and 70+, a mobile screening unit the Big Bus, health promotion for workplaces, community groups and schools; campaigning, Men’s MOT Health Checks, counselling and complementary therapy for people living with cancer and their families.
