Whitehead golf day in memory of Margaret

The fundraiser at Whitehead Golf Club was organised by Carrick man Kerry McLaughlin as a tribute to his late friend, Margaret O’Kane, who passed away almost three years ago.

“Margaret raised £100,000 over the years for the Cancer Research Committee in Carrickfergus,” said Kerry.

The event aims to generate much-needed funds for Pancreatic Research UK.

Kerry hopes to raise between £1000 and £1500 with the venture, which will feature a number of golf competitions and a raffle.

Prizes include a new car for a hole in one, and a holiday in Portugal.

There is also a 2015 Masters flag, signed by Darren Clarke.

Representatives from the charity will be on hand to hand out information leaflets on pancreatic cancer and badges for those taking part.

The awareness element of the day is just as important given the very low survival rate of the disease, Kerry added.

“The survival rate for other types of cancer has improved over the years, but for pancreatic cancer it’s still only three percent, which is the same as it was in the 70s,” he said.

The event will take place this Sunday (May 22) at Whitehead Golf Club, running from 10am to 6:30pm.
