“Walking is the perfect exercise; it is affordable, accessible to all, low risk and low impact. It has been scientifically proven that walking helps to reduce cholesterol, heart disease, strokes, diabetes and more.

“Besides the many physical benefits it also generates a ‘feel good factor’, all of which helps support positive mental health.

“With such undeniable benefits to walking it is fantastic to be able to promote these two new walks which are the perfect way for locals and visitors alike to enjoy the countryside and connect with nature.”

Created to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s 60th year as monarch, the Whitehead attraction is the only Diamond Jubilee Wood in Northern Ireland.

MEA Mayor, Councillor Billy Ashe commented: “The council is keen for residents to get outdoors, get healthy and enjoy our numerous fantastic open spaces. It is therefore very encouraging that two new routes have been added to the Walk NI guide - which is the definitive reference for walking in Northern Ireland on www.walkNI.com.

“With over 20 quality walks listed throughout the borough, there has never been a better time to get outdoors and get walking.”
