Whitehouse campaigners set to target NI Assembly

STAFF and pupils from Whitehouse Primary School are expected to take their 'New School Now' campaign to the Northern Ireland Assembly next week.

A delegation from the school is due to travel to Stormont on Wednesday (May 12) to meet with members of the Education Committee.

Whitehouse Primary was completely destroyed in an arson attack last summer, forcing staff and pupils to move to temporary accommodation at Newtownabbey Community High School.

According to Principal David McConkey, hundreds of letters calling for the school's long-awaited rebuilding project to be given the go-ahead immediately will be handed over to committee Chairman Mervyn Storey MLA.

It is understood that representatives from Whitehouse Primary's 'Comenius Partner Schools' - St James' Primary in Whiteabbey and St Conleth's National School in Co Kildare - may also travel to Parliament Buildings to offer their support to Mr McConkey, his staff and pupils.

The move comes after work on the school's rebuilding project, which had been expected to get under way last year, was put on hold by the Department of Education while it carries out a review of all its capital projects across Northern Ireland.
