Wildlife charity joins Corbet festival line-up

THE Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is donning wellies in Banbridge on July 3 for a rather different cause.

Instead of thrashing about fields looking for birds, they will be thrashing with bands like The Futureheads, And So I Watch You From Afar and Max Raptor.

Festival organiser Aaron McCrummish has generously given the charity a free spot, demonstrating his commitment to the environment and the future of wildlife here.

Tim McCann, Membership Development Manager at the RSPB said, “The RSPB’s message that we need to cherish our environment is for everyone, so we’re literally taking it to the grassroots this summer by having a presence at Banbridge’s first ever music festival, Take It To The Bridge.

“We just know that we are going to receive an awesome reception from the audience there.”

Mr McCrummish said he is looking forward to the RSPB joining music-lovers from across Northern Ireland for the festival.

“Festivals are not just about music,” he said. “They are also about people coming together to share ideas, enthusiasm and passion. It is fantastic to have the environment added to the mix and we hope that the RSPB will get as much as we will out of being here.”

The UK’s largest wildlife conservation charity is hoping to collect as many signatures as it can for its Letter to the Future campaign, as well as for the Northern Irish finalists for the Nature of Farming Award.

“Northern Ireland is really pulling its weight these days in the environment scene,” said Tim. “Our farmers in Co Antrim have been UK finalists for two years running and our campaign to get as many signatures to prevent cuts being made to the environment is generating a lot of interest.

“Playwright Brian Friel and poet Sinead Morrissey signed the Letter to the Future and we hope that loads more will follow.

“Come along and meet us at the festival – music and wildlife – you couldn’t get a better mash up,” added Tim.
