William Kings win again

THE Fountain's William King Memorial Flute Band have ended yet another competition season on a high by retaining the All Ireland Championship title.

At the end of October, the charming surroundings of the Market Place Theatre in Armagh was again the venue for the competition. The William King's scooped first place in the Melody Section to extend their impressive record of wins to 14 in this section and eight Grade 4 wins.

Spokesman for the band, Trevor Mitchell, also revealed that the band had once again travelled to Belfast to the Shankill Road Community Festival Indoor Entertainment Contest also held in October. This prestigious contest saw them once again win the top prize in the Best Melody Flute, Best Entertainment and Best Overall Band sections for the third year in a row. This feat was achieved against 10 other bands.

Trevor Mitchell thanked conductor Drew Porter on the band's behalf for all his hard work and dedication over the years. He said that recent success brings to a close a very successful year and is a fine example why the band is number one in the Province.

Praising the band itself, Mr Mitchell said: "The enduring enthusiasm and dedication of the band ensures the band will continue to perform well. Once again the band has shown it is a fine ambassador for the city of Londonderry and for flute music in general.

"Hard work has kept us in the number one position and I hope that it will stay that way for many years to come."
