‘Willie Nickit’ back to help prevent crime

‘Willie Nickit’ is once again helping the Lisburn Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) and local police launch their Christmas Crime Prevention campaign, which took place at South Eastern Regional College recently.

The campaign which includes crime prevention stands at key locations across the city combined with various other forms of advertising is aimed at promoting personal safety when out shopping and enjoying Christmas parties.

Lisburn PCSP Chairman, Councillor Stephen Magennis, explained: “Each year the PCSP is very keen to remind people of the importance of staying safe and looking after your personal belongings. Even though crime is down, there are still people out there who will take every opportunity to help themselves to your belongings. The PCSP and the PSNI are working closely to inform you how to protect yourselves from characters like Willie Nickit.

“In conjunction with the personal safety message, the Partnership also wishes to emphasise the importance of staying safe when out enjoying the Christmas festivities. There are a number of steps you need to take to ensure a safe night out - we would remind you of the importance of planning ahead, especially your transport home, and of course if you are taking a drink, do so sensibly and try not to get removed from your friends. Your vulnerability is seriously increased if you are alone and under the influence of alcohol.”

Area Commander, Chief Inspector Darrin Jones, said: “There is no doubt that almost everyone enjoys Christmas time when families and loved ones get together to enjoy the festivities but it is important that during this time we all remember to take practical precautions to keep those loved ones and ourselves free from harm.

“By just taking a few moments to lock household doors and windows, place valuables and gifts in the boot of cars, ensure that handbags, shopping bags and wallets are secure or are in sight at all times, organise to stay in the company of friends and have a safe way home after a night out; these are the things that will deter the would be criminal and help us to stay safe and enjoy this festive occasion.”

Councillor Stephen Magennis continued, “This is a very magical time of year but also a time of crisis for many people. We would encourage you to stay safe and check on people who you know may be vulnerable. With your help we can work to make Lisburn safer.”
