Wilson welcomes Council's 3G decision

Cllr Wilson welcomes decision by Council to back his proposal for 3G sports facilities in Ballymoney.

Ulster Unionist Councillor Darryl Wilson has welcomed the decision taken at Tuesday night’s full Council meeting to invest in new sports facilities in Ballymoney.

Cllr Wilson said: “Over the last number of years I have been contacted by countless sports teams asking if Council could provide 3G pitch facilities in the Ballymoney area, as lack of provision and inclement weather conditions combined to significantly reduce ‘pitch time’ available to local clubs and organisations.

“Many local sports clubs were travelling outside of the Borough in a bid to find suitable facilities to train and compete on as current facilities could not cope with the huge demand from local clubs.

“Whenever monies were ring-fenced by DCAL for multi use sports provision within the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough, Ballymoney was the obvious choice as the 3g project fell within the criteria and timeframe constraints set by the Department.

“Going forward we must continue to work towards a greater network of sports facilities within the Borough, especially in areas where there is a current shortfall.

“Access to quality facilities is important within our Borough as we strive to ensure that people have the opportunity to participate in sport and physical activity. I recognise the valuable role that physical activity and sport can play within our community and am so aware of the positive benefits which participation in sport brings to mental health and well-being. I am keenly aware of the importance of providing suitable facilities so that we can increase levels of activity and participation in sport for the entire community regardless of age.”
