Win a wormery with Ballymoney Council

‘One person’s junk is another’s treasure’ is fast becoming a way of life as we start to think about what we throw away and how it might be turned from rubbish to a resource.

To raise awareness of the value of recycling unwanted goods during National Recycling Week, Ballymoney Borough Council is launching a competition to win a wormery and a ‘recycled garden’ at the Knock Road Household Recycling Centre. Visitors to the site will now see a variety of thrown away goods and items pressed into service as part of a vegetable and edible flower garden.

Complementing this, the Council, supported by the Rethink Waste campaign, is also giving away wormeries valued at almost £100 to two lucky winners selected at random from a list of names and addresses of people who call into Knock Road to see the recycled garden or who email/telephone their details to Riada House. A wormery is a highly effective way of dealing with household food waste not currently processed through brown bins. Not only will the wormery deal with your waste but it too is made from recycled plastic.

The recycled garden proves you don’t need a typical garden to grow food. Almost anything can be pressed into use. Growing your own food reduces the amount of food waste you produce, the food miles you generate by purchasing food which travels around the world to your plate and is a highly rewarding way of reconnecting with the world around you.

Declan Donnelly, Ballymoney Borough Council added:

‘Visitors to the Knock Road Household Recycling Centre will be surprised to see an array of recovered items transformed into a vegetable garden. We have food growing in everything from an old motorcycle helmet to a vanity case to a toilet. Hopefully it may encourage site users to think again about what is rubbish and what is a resource’

To be in with a chance of winning one of these fantastic wormeries simply:
