Wind Farm open day

Airtricity is hosting a Wind Farm Open Day at its new Slieve Kirk Wind Farm near Londonderry, on Saturday, June 16, from 11am to 3pm.

It is a fun free event for all the family and is all part of Global Wind Week 2012 and visitors will enjoy guided tours, exploring how a wind turbine works from inside the control centre, and learning how Slieve Kirk can power 22,000 homes while eliminating 31,000 tonnes of harmful CO2  emissions every year.

Children can even get creative and ‘touch a turbine’, leaving a painted handprint on the base of the turbine to mark the celebration.

Shuttle buses to and from the wind farm will operate every 15 minutes from the nearby Belfray Country Inn.

Other fun activities throughout the day include interactive science shows, art competitions, balloon modellers, whirlymill workshops, bouncy castles and a free family barbeque, as well as an appearance by Airtricity’s ‘Doc Energy’, who will be on hand to give out free energy tips and goodie bags.
