Windermere lights up again

Residents in the Windermere area of Lisburn have seen the light thanks to the intervention of Lagan Valley MLA Paul Givan.

Local residents had been left in the dark after a number of broken street lights remained in a state of disrepair for months.

In Winderemere Drive, where there are many elderly and disabled residents, three street lights in a row were broken, leaving a large section of road and footpath shrouded in darkness.

Following concerns raised by local residents, Mr Givan contacted the Roads Service and urged them to repair the street lights in the area as a matter of urgency.

“In one street alone within Windermere, six out of eight lights were not working, which caused concern amongst residents because of the lack of visibility at night, making it less safe to walk and residents feeling less secure in their homes because of the lack of lighting,” said Mr Givan.

“After reporting the lights not working in Windermere within days the lights were repaired and I want to thank Roads Service for the prompt response.”

Mr Givan raised the issue of street lighting with the Roads Minister and additional funding has been allocated by the Department of Regional Development to facilitate the repair of broken lights.

The Lagan Valley MLA is also urging local residents who have concerns about broken lights to contact either himself or the Department as soon as possible.

“The public have a key role to play by reporting the faults through the online system to report a street light that is not working and the information is used to assign work to contractors that will carry out the repairs,” continued Mr Givan.

“I am reporting street lights that are not working directly to the Roads Service Street Lighting Division and anyone who is unsure of using the online system can contact my office and I will report them directly for constituents.

“This is an issue that the public can help with and as a public representative I will continue to press the Roads Services for the work to be carried out as quickly as possible.”
