Window put in by a stone

THE occupants of a house at Stevenson Park, targeted by stone throwers in the early hours of Saturday morning have said they do not believe local young people were responsible for the attack.

For the second time in a year the front window has been smashed, this time the stone crashing through both panes of the double glazing, showering the front room with shards of glass.

Arlene and John O’Donnell were asleep in bed upstairs when they were woken by a loud noise. John thought it was one of the children, but as they got up to investigate there was another loud noise.

“We came downstairs and my husband opened the front door and there was a fellow in a grey hoodie climbing over the wire fence to the side of the house. Because of the street light we could see there were two other boys with dark hoodies in the field and they ran off towards Currynierin,” she said.

Mrs O’Donnell said that last year one pane of glass had been broken in the four feet square front window, and before that the house had been targeted by missiles and the upper bedroom window was broken.

“During the week there were young lads in the field causing a nuisance and I put them out a couple of times but they kept coming back. They were not local boys. I believe that the attack on my house might be a result of the trouble these lads caused,” she said.

Revealing that she hoped the Housing Executive would replace the glass, Mrs O’Donnell said that just an hour before the window was damaged her teenage son had been sitting watching television.

“Where he was sitting he could have been killed.

“That stone would have hit him on the head,” she said.

The PSNI said anyone who witnessed the incident or had information should telephone 0845 600 8000 or Crimestoppers.
