Wings Appeal collectors aim to top award-winning total

CARRICK residents are being urged to dig deep to support Royal Air Force veterans fallen on hard times.

As the Borough prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the local branch of the RAF Association has launched its annual Wings Appeal, which funds welfare services for former and serving recruits and their families.

The Carrick branch, which also takes in Newtownabbey and Islandmagee, has set itself the ambitious target of surpassing its 2009 total of 30,700, the largest sum raised through a traditional collection by any branch.

Backing the 2010 appeal, the Mayor, Alderman Jim McClurg, said: “I was delighted to learn that the Carrickfergus Branch collected more than any branch in the whole of the UK last year. I will not be surprised if that total is surpassed in 2010 due to the tremendous support our residents normally afford the forces and their veterans.

“I would urge all citizens to be particularly generous in this the 70th anniversary of what was probably the most important battle of the 20th century for these islands.”

The RAF Association reponds to over 23,000 calls for help each year. Half of those who qualify for assistance are now aged 80 or over.

Wing Commander Noel Williams, the Wings Appeal Organiser, said: “They fought for the freedom we enjoy today, so the RAF Association is asking residents to help those who gave a huge portion of their ‘yesterday’ so that you could have a ‘secure tomorrow’ - give as they gave.”

However, although the Wings Appeal is closely associated with Battle of Britain commemorations, RAFA also works with veterans of more recent service and the families of current recruits.

Branch chairman Colin Murphy explained: “It is not just the veterans of the Second World War who need help. There are many who are very much younger and were engaged in operations in the numerous conflicts which have taken place since 1945.

“The role played in Korea, the Falklands, the two Gulf Wars, together with the ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, have highlighted once more the many sacrifices our armed forces heroes are called upon to make, and of course many are paying a terrible price for their devotion to duty and country.”

RAFA provides care in the community for veterans unable to claim public welfare, helping with living expenses, healthcare, social services and housing.

Collections will be made throughout the Borough during the appeal. Cheques payable to RAF Association can also be sent to RAF Association, 30 Red Fort Drive, Carrickfergus BT38 9EN.
