Woman called police constable '˜a baldy bastard' during Maghera house party incident

Edel McKenna, from Main Street, Portglenone, was also ordered to carry out 60 hours of community service.

The 21-year-old admitted assaulting the constable, resisting police and disorderly behaviour in the early hours of June 20 last year.

The court heard that police were called to a noisy party taking place in a house at Tirkane Court at 12.45am and found eight people outside the property.

They were shouting and acting aggressively towards police, including the defendant who told an officer to “f**k off”, said a prosecuting barrister.

He said someone also shouted “No f**king touting”, but police could not identify who shouted the remark.

The prosecutor said police warned the group to move back inside the property and they complied.

Continuing, counsel pointed out that police spoke to a female who told them that the defendant was responsible for making the remark about touting.

He said police then entered the property and as they tried to remove her she began lashing out and refused to get into the police car.

The barrister said McKenna punched a constable on the mouth and continued to lash out and shout verbal abuse at police, calling an officer “a f**king baldy bastard.”

Defendant had to be handcuffed and a cell van was tasked to remove her from the area, counsel added.

Defence barrister Liam McStay said the defendant wished to apologise for assaulting the officer.

Mr McStay said McKenna had an unsettled lifestyle and background at the time of the offences.

In a separate matter, defendant also admitted stealing a bottle of coke and a sandwich, valued £3.80 from Crawfords supermarket in Maghera on March 9 last year.

The court heard she was spotted by an assistant manager leaving the premises without paying for the items.

Imposing the combination order, District Judge Alan White told defendant that her behaviour had been disgraceful.

However, Mr White remarked that McKenna was young enough to change her life by working with probation and accepting any alcohol counselling services they offer to provide her.
