Woman kickedcops in shins

A Coleraine woman who kicked two police officers on the shins while being disorderly outside a Portrush hotel in the early hours has been put on Probation for six months, a court has heard.

Gillian Johnson (40), of Elms Park, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court last Thursday for sentencing on two charges of assaulting police and a third charge of disorderly behaviour in relation to an incident on January 24 this year at Eglinton Street.

A prosecutor said at 2.30am police on mobile patrol in Portrush saw a female in an altercation with others outside the Eglinton Hotel.

She was being restrained and was shouting and swearing at people and ignored warnings from police and continued to shout and tried to get past towards the hotel.

The prosecutor said the defendant appeared to be unhappy that she was ejected from the hotel and was shouting: “You are nothing but b--tards” towards individuals and then kicked out at police when arrested, striking two officers on the shins.

Defence solicitor Denise Gillan said her client does not go out often but had been in the premises with her sister who was involved in an altercation and the defendant ended up being assaulted and then was ejected and was trying to get back inside.

Ms Gillan said Johnson was “bitterly ashamed” of her actions.

Putting the defendant on Probation for six months, District Judge Liam McNally told her: “Drink seemed to have got the better of you on this occasion”.
