They were asked to leave the area and Smith began shouting and swearing at police. She then threw the beer can at the officer.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that alcohol had been a problem for the 35-year-old. However she hadn’t taken a drink since the incident.

He asked the judge to view her behaviour on this night as an "aberration".

Sentencing was adjourned until August 31 to allow probation to assess if Smith is suitable for probation or community service.
