Josephine Hoey, Chestnut Place, Banbridge, admitted the theft of the glasses, valued at £20, when she appeared last Thursday at the local magistrates’ court.

The court heard a member of staff at Boots, Newry Street, noticed the defendant looking at sunglasses before picking up a pair and leaving the store without paying. Out on the street she put them in her pocket. Hoey accepted that she had taken the glasses but said it had not been intentional.

A solicitor representing the defendant said she was taking medication.

He added that she had largely stayed on the straight and narrow but had no recollection of the offence.

District Judge, Mr Paul Copeland, adjourned the matter until October 22 so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained to consider the possibility of probation.
