Women in Lisburn Council hear from inspirational speakers

TO mark ‘Women in Local Councils Week’ Lisburn City Council recently hosted an event, led by two inspirational and motivational speakers, for its female staff.

Freeman of the City, Dr Janet Gray, MBE and successful business woman Mrs Una McSorley spoke to an audience, made up of female Councillors and Officers, and gave their perspectives on successful women in today’s society.

Janet, delivered a very motivational address to the audience as she relayed her personal story. She spoke of how when she lost her eyesight at the age of 21 she changed from being a happy, confident and outgoing person to someone who felt sad, frightened and vulnerable.

However, not a person to be fazed by a challenge Janet learnt to water-ski and entered her first championship after only seven months. She told the female audience how waterskiing made her feel that her life had begun again and that she had found new freedom and self-confidence.

Janet also talked about her water skiing accident in 2004 which left her fighting for her life. To be back in training three years after this accident which left her on life support was a phenomenal achievement and showed the audience how by remaining committed and dedicated you can meet your goals. Janet finished her talk by saying that the toughest decision you can ever make is to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and move on but in doing so you gain experience and a more positive attitude. Following Janet was Una McSorley of Marcomm who spoke about how females can communicate with impact.

Una informed the audience how they can transform their thoughts and ideas into powerful pieces of communication whether it is a speech or a presentation using mind mapping. The female audience gained a lot of inspiration and communication tools from these two talks as part of Women in Local Councils Week.
