Women's groups benefit from £1.4m from DSD

OVER the past three years women's groups in Londonderry will have received almost one-and-a-half million pounds in state funding by the end of the current financial year.

A range of groups in Londonderry, Limavady and Strabane are recipients of state funds provided by the Department of Social Development (DSD). Ten local women's groups will by the end of 2011 have received a total of 1,449,979.06 from DSD.

Since 2007 the Foyle Women's Information Network has received 151,547.46 from DSD and is scheduled to receive a further 48,008.00 this year.

The Strathfoyle Women's Activity Group Ltd received 254,015 during the same period and are scheduled to receive a further 81,274.44. The Women's Centre received 319,071.96 over the past three years and will receive another 103,220.49 in 2010/2011.

The Waterside Women's Centre received a total of 271,638.60 over the past three years and will get 87,516.23 from the DSD this year.

Smaller groups also benefitted from state funds with the Currynierin Women's Action Committee receiving 1,000, the Newbuildings Women's Group receiving 3,100, Strabane and Lifford Women's Group receiving 1,000, Bogside and Brandywell Women's Group receiving 52,963.56, Galliagh Women's Group receiving 52,611.62, Roe Valley Women's Network receiving 20,911.00.

The DSD sponsored money was delivered through a variety of funding schemes including the Community Investment Fund, the Children and Young People's Fund, the Women's Centre Childcare Fund, the Community Volunteering Scheme and the Neighbourhood Renewal Investment Fund. Social Development Minister revealed the funding allocation in response to a query tabled at the Stormont Assembly.
