Wood ya believe it...60ft tree crashes down

Local man Kenny Lawrence was left in a ‘tree’mendous state of shock when a 60 foot tree came down during the bad weather last week.

The tree, estimated to be between 350 to 400 years old, luckily crashed down in between two cattle sheds narrowly missing the Lawrence family home.

However Kenny from Coolyvenny, Aghadowey didn’t ‘twig’ on until later how much damage the tree could have caused.

He explained: “It wasn’t until afterwards that I realised what a lucky escape we’d had. If the wind had changed direction slightly the tree would have definitely come down on the cattle sheds and utterly destroyed them. This would have ended up causing lots of damage and costing me several thousand pounds to get fixed.

“Even worse, the tree could have split differently and come crashing down close to the house, it could have even killed or injured someone passing at that time. We are very fortunate that it fell the way it did between the sheds and did the minimum of damage.”

Hoping to replant a new tree in its memory, Kenny added: “I’m obviously disappointed to see something so old be destroyed. The tree has been there as long as I can remember - it must be around 350 to 400 years old.

“However once it has been cut up and removed from the area, I’m going to replant a handful of seeds similar to it, just to ensure that one day a tree might stand in that spot again for others to enjoy.

“But, one thing’s for sure, this tree won’t go to waste and it will keep a lot of people warm this winter.”
