Work begins on St Hilda’s project

WORK has begun this week on re-developing the site at St. Hilda’s Church in Seymour Hill.

The Rev. David Boyland, Rector of St. Hilda’s, said that it was wonderful news that work is finally underway on the project.

Concerns had been raised by local residents after the Church became a target for vandals, whilst thieves were stealing copper from the roof, as it lay empty for over a year.

In January 2011 a Service of Praise and Thanksgiving was held in Kilmakee Parish to mark the redevelopment of St. Hilda’s Church. Details were revealed for the existing church was to be demolished, and a new church and a 76-bed nursing home to be built on the site.

The new building will include a Church, offices, a prayer room, a cafe, a hall and a minor hall.

However, the project didn’t get off the ground as quickly as anticipated, leaving people wondering what was happening.

Speaking this week, Rev. Boyland confirmed that work has now started on the project.

“The contractors just moved to the site at the beginning of this week. It is hoped that the Church itself will take six to eight months and the nursing home will take longer” he said.

Whilst they have been waiting for the work to begin, members of St. Hilda’s have attended services in the local school and in local community halls and Rev. Boyland said he will be delighted to be able to be back in the Church once again.

“Indeed we will,” he said. “During this time we have been in the neighbouring school and halls, it will be good to be back in the Church.”
