Work begins to combat flooding

North Antrim MLA Robin Swann (UUP) said he hoped the start of Phase One of the Ballymena Flood Alleviation Project “would set residents’ minds at ease. He said the “positive and workable action was being taken to combat the stress and turmoil caused by flooding in the past.”

NI Water, together with its appointed contractor, AG Wilson Civil Engineering Ltd, commenced work on the existing sewers on the Toome Road, Queen Street, Wakehurst Road and Larne Road in Ballymena, during the first week of July.

It is anticipated that the work will take about six weeks to complete and it is proposed to repair around 65 defects in these areas.

Detailed traffic arrangements have been discussed and agreed with Transport NI to try to minimise the impact of these works on residents, road users and the public.

In order to carry out the work safely, it will be necessary to have a temporary lane closure on the Wakehurst Road for the duration of the works. Two-way traffic will be maintained with the use of temporary traffic lights.

Vehicular access will be maintained for residents where possible and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
