Work experience delight for Carla!

Written by Carla Hunter

ON Monday of last week I made my way over to the Ballymoney Times office, worrying the whole time.

My name is Carla Hunter and last week I was on work experience for school. I had tried to arrange work with the BBC, but unfortunately they didn’t to let me know if I had been accepted or not. Thinking there was no way I would get in anywhere I wanted, I anxiously waited as my teacher contacted the Times. Luckily for me they were completely willing to take me on, although I’m sure they wish they hadn’t now! Well, maybe my coffee-making skills have redeemed me, and the chocolate cake I brought in on Friday probably helped too.

Before the week I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, I figured I’d just go with the flow and see where I ended up. Not anymore. Now I know that journalism is definately what I want to do.

Call it the luck of the draw or someone looking out for me, regardless I’ve had the best week and I’m very pleased at finally making up my mind in terms of a career.

The guys in the Times are all really friendly, helpful people and I’ve enjoyed every second of working here. It’s thanks to them that I’m one of the few that appears to have actually had a good time on work experience! They let me pitch in straightaway, and I got to write two articles on my first day. Since then I’ve been able to write a number of articles.

I also got to go out to the police review and the Coleraine Magistrates Court, but unfortunately didn’t manage to get out with the “expert photographer”.

If I could change anything about my placement, there would only be one thing I would change - I’d get all the United supporters to wise up! But I guess their sense of humour might just save them from the depths of outright disgust.

Seriously, I’d like to thank everyone in the office for treating me so well, I’m going to miss working with them.
