Work on revamp of duck pond nears completion

REPRESENTATIVES of Lisburn City Council and the Alpha Programme have visited Wallace Park to see the work taking place to refurbish the duck pond.

The works are part of Phase Two of the Wallace Park refurbishments and represent an investment of £170,000.

The Mayor, Alderman Paul Porter, said it was ‘great’ to see the works to the duck pond nearing completion.

“This is a popular area of the park and I would like to thank residents for their patience throughout the park refurbishments. I would also like to thank the Alpha Programme for providing the Council with grant assistance for this element of the works.”

The work on the duck pond is part of a major revamp of the park.

Councillor David Archer, Chairman of the Leisure Services Committee, added: “The Council has committed considerable investment to Wallace Park and the completion of the duck pond is just the latest stage in the refurbishment programme.

“These works have rectified the drainage problem, opened up the area to provide a better line of sight within the park to the pond, repaired the perimeter pathways and refurbished the steps leading to the Main Avenue.”

the Council has also provided a timber-decked platform for viewing and feeding the ducks which use the duck pond.

Mr Lyle Andrews, representing the Alpha Steering Group, which funded the new railing around the duck pond, said: ”The improvements will have a direct and positive impact on the daily lives of people who live within the area of the park and those who use it regularly.

“This project should be a major focal point for the parks users and encourage interest in wildlife and improving welfare for the birds and other animals residing in the park.”
