Work set to start on public realm

Work on the long awaited £4.7m Public Realm Project that will transform Lisburn city centre is due to start soon, with plans of a completion date next summer.

The project which had been scheduled to start earlier this year, will transform Market Square, Bow Street, Haslem’s Lane, Market Street and Graham Gardens to high quality contemporary design standards.

It’s hoped the project will deliver high quality streetscapes and shared spaces, and contribute positively to the economic and social vitality of the city.

The work will significantly raise the quality of the environment to enable Lisburn City Centre to diversify and create modern office accommodation and in turn attract business and leisure activities outside traditional business hours.

The proposed environmental improvement works will include paving, kerbing, resurfacing, signage and planting and bespoke elements including street furniture, street lighting and water features.

The Northern Ireland Water Service, which had been carrying work in the area, confirmed that there would be a fortnight delay with work carried out at Bow Street but said that it would be completed by the first week of July.

A spokesperson for Lisburn City Council have said that they will monitor the situation but added that the works were outside the council’s control.

A NI Water spokesperson said, “There has been a delay in completing the traffic section of Bow Street for a number of reasons, including the ground conditions encountered in the area.”
