Work starts on rail line upgrade

TRANSLINK NI Railways is advising residents living near Dunmurry Train Station that platform extension work and an upgrade of the Meetinghouse Lane Footpath level crossing will take place until May.

Translink has been carrying out platform extension works at a number of stations since the beginning of 2011, to accommodate twenty new Class 4000 trains.

The extension of the platforms at Dunmurry is the latest in a series along the Lisburn line.

Extensions have already been carried out at Hilden, Finaghy and Lambeg and further works are planned at Derriaghy before all of the Class 4000 trains come into service in early 2012.

Platform extension work at Dunmurry began on January 30 and will last until March 4.

The upgrade of Meetinghouse Lane will take place between February 5 and late May 2012 and will involve the replacement of the gates at the Dunmurry pedestrian level crossing with a new barrier lifting system.

This new system will give increased accessibility for pedestrians with prams and people using mobility devices as they will no longer have to manually operate the gates that are currently in place.

There will be some night time work during the first six weeks of activity and the commissioning and testing of the new barriers will take place in May.

Translink NI Railways will be rolling out a communications programme from February 2012 onwards to increase awareness among residents and political and community stakeholders about the new barrier system at Meetinghouse Lane crossing.

Translink have set up a resident’s helpline with McLaughlin and Harvey - 028 9034 2777 - should anyone have any concerns with how the work is being carried out.

Anthony Stove, Project Engineer with Translink says the work is an important part of Translink’s New Trains project: “This extension work is part of our longer term preparation to allow us to operate longer trains and increase onboard capacity for passengers where there is a requirement. Some night work will be required to complete the operation, however we will endeavour to complete the work as quickly as possible and keep noise and disruption to a minimum.

“We have contacted local residents directly to alert them to the work and would ask for their patience and support as we work to improve local rail services,” said Mr Stove.
