Worked tirelessly for betterment of society

She lived a long, rich and varied life and is remembered by all who knew her as a principled lady who worked tirelessly for the betterment of society.

Maimie McClean married Jack Waugh in 1941. They had four children Bill, Helen, Barbara and Richard.

Family was Maimie’s deepest and most enduring source of love and satisfaction throughout her long life. She had the pleasure of being surrounded by loving children, grand-children and great grand-children.

Maimie’s first passion was for the piano. She was a gifted and dedicated pianist, who, after achieving her LRAM at the Royal Academy of Music, pursued her career as a teacher.

She greatly enjoyed reading, tapestry work, gardening, flower arranging, painting and being involved in church and community work was very important to her.

An enthusiastic founder member of Waringstown WI, she held many offices including WI executive member for Co. Down.

Maimie was an active member of Donaghcloney Presbyterian church and the PWA and used her musical skills on many occasions as church organist and in training choirs for both the WI and PWA.

If there was one character trait that defined Maimie’s life it was the need to do something positive when she believed that action was called for, she was never one to sit on the side-lines.

This was exemplified when her daughter was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She realised that this terrible disease was little known, and even less understood at that time. so she endeavoured to change this situation.

As Co-founder of Action MS she organised many fund-raising activities for medical research and promoted awareness of MS. Her achievements were recognised when she was awarded an MBE for her diligent work in this area.

Her funeral left her home in Blackscull for the service in Donaghcloney Presbyterian Church which was conducted by Rev A Moffett, who paid tribute to her many achievements.

Her chosen hymns “Great is thy Faithfulness” & “To God Be The Glory “ were sung with Mrs Isobel Curran presiding at the organ.

Maimie Waugh’s passing is deeply regretted by her son Bill, daughter Barbara, daughter-in-law Alice, sons-in-law Jackie and Ray, grandchildren, great grandchildren and the wider family circle.

She touched the lives of many people and will be dearly missed by all who knew and cherished her.
