Workers fear for their jobs at HML firm

WORKERS in the HML call centre in Springtown are growing concerned after they were told that redundancies were imminent.

The 400-strong workforce were informed on Monday that management have entered a 90-day consultation period with unions to discuss the security of jobs over the company's five UK sites.

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has voiced his concern for these HML workers, stating: "It is a hugely worrying time for staff when they hear of their employer contemplating job cuts.' What we have to do now is make sure that HML recognises the high-quality performance and productivity that they get here in Derry - that they recognise there is a good skills base here and high customer satisfaction.'"

Mr Durkan went on to say that he intends to work with the company, to mitigate any impact on the Springtown workforce. He also claimed that he wants other bodies, noteably Invest NI, to "make sure that they (HML) realise that the facility they have here serves them well."

A spokeswoman from HML said the company was a successful one but that the company "need to act now to resize the business", and that every role within the business is currently being reviewed.
