Working Group to be set up following flooding chaos

ALDERMAN Jonathan Craig, MLA, has welcomed the announcement that the Minister for the Department of Regional Development, Danny Kennedy, MLA, has agreed to Mr Craig’s request that a Working Group be established to investigate why many areas in Lisburn suffered greatly from the flooding.

Mr Craig requested the Working Group, which will include the statutory agencies, be formed after spending most of last week dealing with residents whose homes or properties were flooded.

Mr Craig said, “Having witnessed first-hand the distress and misery caused to so many families last week when they saw their homes devastated by the flooding and the effect that this was having, it was imperative that Government agencies working together do everything in their power to stop or alleviate the possibility of this type of disaster recurring.

“I would like to thank the Minister not only for attending some of the problem areas in our City, but more importantly taking forward my suggestion to set up a Working Group to investigate why certain areas of the City of Lisburn were so badly affected by the recent bad weather which left flooding and sewage in so many homes and in our streets.” Mr Craig added, “It is imperative that investigations are fully taken forward by the various agencies, so that remedial work that needs to be carried out to alleviate flooding problems in the Lisburn area is done as a matter of urgency.

“These investigations looking at why so many areas in our City, most for the first time had flooding problems, will send a clear message to residents that Government Agencies are playing their part and giving reassurance to local residents that everything that can be done will be done to alleviate the devastating scenes which were witnessed last week.”
