Working towards a positive future for older people

A survey to assess the needs of older people in the Limavady, Coleraine, Ballymoney and Moyle areas is being carried out by the Causeway Older Active Strategic Team (C.O.A.S.T.).

The survey aims to highlight what vital services are needed to help improve and enhance the lives of people in later life.

Thelma Dillon, Chairperson of C.O.A.S.T., said: “Older people have told us about some gaps in services including handymen schemes, befriending schemes and Good Morning services. We hope to find out even more valuable information from our telephone survey. We are currently making an application to Big Lottery looking at extending services for older people. Older men, in particular, appear to be more isolated so we are looking at ways to work with HandyMen (NI), a social economy project run by ‘Da’ Young Fathers Project in Derry.”

Elaine Simpson, Age NI Sub regional Development Manager who works with COAST, explained: “There are almost 29,000 people over 60 in the Limavady, Coleraine, Ballymoney and Moyle areas and we want to hear what they have to say about issues affecting them in their own communities. We will continue to work with age sector groups and the community sector across the 4 council areas providing support, information and vital networking opportunities to increase their long term sustainability now and into the future.”

To take part in the phone survey during June or to find out more about the sub regional network please call Thelma Dillon on 028 2076 2359 or Una Mulgrew on 028 9089 2634. To find out about upcoming events and services, sign up to the C.O.A.S.T - Causeway Older Active Strategic Team facebook page.
